Las Iguanas dinner for two

Who doesn't love well-priced food and constant happy hour cocktails? When Las Iguanas invited me down to try the menu I was excited... not only have I heard good things about the food but it has a special place in my heart. It was the venue for Henry and I's first date and so (even though its a chain) it always feels like somewhere special for us.

The Restuarant and Service

Located in what I like to call 'New Brighton' just opposite the Jubilee library, the Las Iguanas restaurant is split into two parts. On the right are the high stalls and buzz of a cocktail bar, that has an all day every day 2-4-1 cocktails menu and on the left is a large restaurant. Filled with a combination of cosy booths, high stooled tables and low intimate tables for two, it has something for everybody.

The service, throughout the meal, was amazing. The waiter we had was attentive and friendly and had great knowledge of the menu and the drinks. As you will see we had a slight problem with the cooking of the steak but it was rectified quickly and cheerfully- which can sometimes not be the case in restaurants on a busy Friday night!

The Drinks

For drinks, we (of course) went for cocktails. Although the two for one is great for a drink on a night out, remember to bear this in mind when ordering- you could easily end up with two drinks you don't like with your meal... or getting much drunker than you'd originally planned!

Henry went for the Brazilian spring punch; a mixture of Cachaca, raspberry, lime and cava and I opted for the limited edition 'it takes two'. The cocktail I chose was a mixture of vodka, peach, elderflower, lime and cranberry and was amazing. We ended up having one of each which is a great option when you go as a couple.

The Food

To start we went for two options. 'Holy guacamole' a make your own guacamole with options to season on the side and served with spice-dusted corn chips. I am never a fan of tomatoes in guacamole but the build you own option was a nice touch.

For some people their weakness is bags, for others it's shoes.. for me it has to be cheese! So when we saw the 'Dadinhos' (crispy cheese cubes) served with chilli jam we had to order them. They weren't what we were expecting; with a crispy coating rather than fried cheese they came on a kebab stick and actually went great with the guacamole rather than the sweet chilli sauce.

For main we were torn; with a menu filled with options from Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Mexico there is something for everyone. In the end Henry went for the Argentine Gaucho steak and I chose the Peruvian slow cooked lamb shank.

My 'fall off the bone' lamb was perfectly cooked with a rich and flavoursome sauce and a sweet potato mash on the side. For me the mash on its own was a little bland however combined with the crispy onions, succulent lamb and rich red wine and chilli sauce it complimented the meal nicely.

Unfortunately, Henry's steak came out rare (he ordered it medium) however as soon as we told the waiter they took it away quickly and returned it on a fresh plate, perfectly cooked. The steak itself was amazing; a really nice piece of meat, with a great barbequed flavour. Henry said it would be in his top 5 ever steaks. The steak was served with chimichurri (a sauce made from herbs and chili) a salad and a fantastic creamed sweetcorn.

We decided to share a pudding. The cinnamon-sugar dusted churros come with both a chocolate sauce and a beautiful dulce de leche. I loved the serving of the churros, in a striped paper bag served alongside the sauces and for someone who doesn't always like dark chocolate, I enjoyed the sweet milk chocolate dip.

The Allergies

I was really impressed with how allergy conscious the menu was. On arrival they offered us both the allergen menu which is both in the restaurant and available online. The main menu also clearly states allergens with an easy to follow key, and an alternative options for a variety of allergens.

Overall, we both really enjoyed the meal and atmosphere and even stayed later to sit in the bar with another cocktail. We will definitely head back for a week day dinner and would recommend to big parties or a cheeky cocktail before a night out.

Did you see my last posts all about our holidays to Fuerteventura
